ARTIST STATEMENT

I like broken things. They carry memories, vulnerability, and the hope of renewal. I use broken vintage ceramics that I find at yard sales and thrift shops to create flowerpots-a new use for these often discarded items. 

 

I hand cut the ceramic into tiles that I adhere to a terra cotta form. I then create unique grout colors by adding oxide pigment to base colors. Using a pastry bag, I grout the areas between the tiles.

 

By using familiar fragments and contemporary truisms, I create objects that feel at once nostalgic and current.  As a material, ceramic is heroically strong and heartbreakingly fragile. My work explores that tension between frailty and longevity.

 

These pots also serve as quiet reminders that sometimes even when handled with care, things just break. What we make from the broken pieces can, if we are lucky, become something more beautiful, or at least something more interesting. They remind us that sometimes the break is the rain we need to make new flowers grow.
